This is my trip to New Zealand; I went to New Zealand because the Lord of the Rings trilogy is filmed there. My trip started in Arrowtown for a millennium walk.
Arrowtown Millennium walk
You walk 4,2 km along the arrow river a quarter of a mile downstream of New Zealand, than you can see the Gladden fields the Lord of the rings trilogy is filmed there. This field is used in almost all of the movies, it’s a recognizable place for the watchers of the movies and a very special place for the real fans. In Otago is a 150 years European settlement. Gold diggers live there since 1860. You can see a lot of mines there. If you have been to all this places you end were you began and there is a souvenir shop with photos of the scenes from Lord of the Rings in the Gladden fields.
I really enjoyed this walk. It was quite funny to recognize the Gladden fields from the movie you watched at the couch home.
The second part of my trip was Mount Doom, the volcano Ngauruhoe.
The volcano
By the volcano I have made a walk with a GPS at the Mount Doom. In the movie of Lord of the rings they used the wood for a lot of scenes and the mount doom. The mount doom was the home of the baddie Sauron. When you walk at the 20 km hiking trail you will see his ‘home’. The real climbers can change their way to get of the trail behind 4 km. They can climb at the volcano. This volcano is also used when Frodo throws the ring in to the lava. But you can’t entre this part of the volcano because the ground is not stable and it’s lava sand so you can sink. You can’t get to close at the volcano because the air is polluting with sulphur fumes.
I liked this volcano very much. The most important scene of Frodo was filmed here! The walk was very hard but it’s worth it!
My next trip was to Hobbiton, the village not far away from Matamata.
Hobbiton
In Hobbiton I walked around the whole movie set of the movie The Hobbit. The walk took 2 hours but it was quite fun. I saw the Hobbit Hostel, the green hills, the sheep with their lambs. In the hostel I get a glass of milk with a meal. In this hostel I get the real “Hobbit experience”.
This place was my favorite! I feel like a real Hobbit J
Then I travel to the next part of my trip, Matamata!
Matamata
Matamata is the movie set of the popular movie, The Hobbit. It’s a little hill with a lot of little cottages in it! This is a typical scene and a really recognizable scene for watchers of the hobbit. It’s a little agricultural village with some hotels for people like me and for holiday makers.
This little hill was very cute with his little cottages but it was disappointing that at one site of the hill walk sheep and where the sheep walked the cottages where gone. Sadly!
The next place is the longest hike of the whole trip, National Park.
National Park
This is the décor of a lot of scenes in the trilogy. I saw 3 volcanos; one is used as the Mount Doom. But it’s not only used as décor for this trilogy but also as ski and walk aria. Also this aria is on the World Heritage Site. In this park is also the volcano Ngauruhoe. The park is used as the land Mordon, the home of Sauron. In Mordon are a lot of bare landscapes perfect as home for Sauron. In this area is the scene of the journey of Frodo and Sam filmed.
My trip was very wonderful! I went to the most popular places of the movie set. I can’t tell witch scene by witch place belongs because all of the places I have seen are used a lot of times in the movies. But even I got the real lord of the rings and hobbit experience; it was a trip to never forget!
